How to Play GRAIN ROT — Beginner Guide
Learn the Outpost tutorial, first Deep Layer run, extraction loop and the mistakes that end beginner runs.
Direct answer
Prepare at the Outpost, ride the cursed elevator into a generated Deep Layer, break or carry valuables, turn useful loot into gold, and return before the whole crew loses its vessels. Spend what you secure on Outpost upgrades, then repeat. Your first goal is a safe extraction, not clearing every room.

What to do in the first ten minutes
Follow Biggy and Murch's tutorial jobs before trying to optimize the Outpost. The current walkthrough introduces cleaning and repairing the shelter, leaving your wooden vessel as a Spark, breaking weak constructs with the demolition mallet, building replacements, and using artifact coins to unlock a random construct blueprint. Read the clipboard when the next objective is unclear. Exact costs can change, so follow the number shown in your build instead of an old guide screenshot.
Prepare for your first Deep Layer descent
Bring only tools you understand and leave enough inventory flexibility to move valuables. The starter mallet is primarily a demolition tool; do not assume it is a strong combat weapon. Check the elevator symbols before descending because they preview special conditions such as a fuse objective, extra enemies or reduced lighting. In co-op, agree on a simple rally point near the elevator before everyone runs in a different direction.
The beginner extraction loop
- Mark the elevator and nearby safe routes before exploring.
- Break weak furniture for scrap and carry higher-value objects toward the processing area.
- Listen for Corrupted and preserve stamina before entering unknown corridors.
- Satisfy the elevator's current requirements, including a replacement fuse when that modifier appears.
- Process loot only when the crew is ready for the noise and pressure it can create.
- Return to the elevator with secured value instead of gambling the whole run on one more room.
Survival priorities that matter more than kills
GRAIN ROT rewards route control and extraction discipline. Corners and doors break sight lines, temporary constructs can slow a pursuer, and a clear retreat route is often more valuable than a fight. If a vessel breaks, the Living Spark can remain in the run and search for another host, but that recovery window is temporary. Keep the crew close enough to help without stacking everyone in one doorway.
Common beginner mistakes
Do not treat every Corrupted as mandatory combat. Do not spend all stamina reaching a room with no escape plan. Do not trigger noisy processing while teammates are scattered. Do not confuse unsecured run loot with permanent Outpost progress: the official description says the run's loot is lost if everyone breaks before extraction. Most importantly, do not turn the first successful haul into a wipe by staying for a marginal extra item.
What to do after a successful extraction
Return to the Outpost, use the secured haul to improve rooms, unlock interactive furniture and strengthen future runs. Favor upgrades that solve the problem that actually ended your previous attempt—navigation, carrying, healing, stamina or safer processing—rather than copying a fixed upgrade order from an older patch. The loop gets easier when each descent has one clear progression goal.
